Polonnaruwa - Sri Lanka
This was the capital of Sri Lanka when ancient kings abandoned Anuradhapura due to invasions from South Indians. (Many great Kings like Vijayabahu (1055-1110 A.D.) Parakramabahu the great (1116-1186 A.D.) King Nissanka Malla (1187-1192 A.D)) ruled Sri Lanka from Here.

It was a south India King Kalinga Maga (1215-1236 AD) who invaded the place and did lot of damages to Buddhist temples in Polonnaruwa to put up Hindu Kovils for propagation of Hinduism. Kalinga Ela- Navigable canal from Trincomalee Mahaweli River was constructed to facilitate ships to com to Polonnaruwa and interior through this canal.

Parakrama Samudra or sea of Parakrama is a great work done by King Parakramabahu the great. The 11 mile long bund with an average of 70 ft high embankment is really an outstanding work even now to appreciate by any.

The statue of King Parakramabahu is also erected close to this reservoir. The ruins of an ancient library Potgul vihara is also located close to the statue. Many ruins of ancient places, Temples, Kovils, a temple of the tooth relic, and a lot more too could be found here as at Anuradhapura. Shiva and Vishnu Devales (Hindu Temple) with granite Siva Linga or the phallus of God Shiva too, could be found around these palaces of Polonnaruwa, which were erected during rule of the area.

GalVihara is the attractive cut of all granite Statues found at Polonnaruwa. Thee four massive figures of Lord Buddha carved cut of the living rock depicts Lord Buddha in standing seated and recumbent position, all at the same location.

Lotus Pond or the place to bath cut in stone in the shape of an eight petaled lotus flower in full bloom is also a fascinating sight and ancient pipe line could be seen, that had supplied water to this pond.

Somawathie stupa is also located about 30 Km from Polonnaruwa a Tooth Relic of Lord Buddha is believed to be here.

Madirigiriya Situated in Polonnaruwa district in the north central province of Sri Lanka. Many ancient Kings had constructed many structures where only the stone pillars are seen at present.
